About Me

Dr. REEM OLABY.

As an educator, pharmacist, and scientist, I am passionate about bridging research, education, and community impact. With Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Biotechnology from The American University in Cairo, my research focused on identifying therapeutic leads for Hepatitis C Virus and Malaria. My collaborations with institutions such as Scripps Research Institute, Caltech, UC Davis, Johns Hopkins University, Rutgers University, Stanford University, and Institut Pasteur de Lille led to multiple peer-reviewed publications and three USPTO patents.

To expand my influence beyond the laboratory, I earned a Master of Public Health from George Washington University, concentrating on Public Health Marketing, Promotion, and Community Advocacy. This experience enriched my ability to communicate scientific knowledge effectively to diverse populations.

My passion for neuroscience research led me to UC Davis MIND Institute as an NIH-funded postdoctoral fellow in the Autism Research Training Program. Under the mentorship of Dr. Flora Tassone and co-mentorship of Dr. Randi Hagerman, I explored the genetics and epigenetics of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fragile X Syndrome, and Fragile X-Associated Tremor and Ataxia Syndrome.

Currently, I serve as an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Biotechnology at the College of Health Sciences, California Northstate University. I am the chair of the Appointment, Retention and Promotion Committee and Co-Chair of the Assessment Committee. I teach an array of courses including Pharmacology for Nursing, Advanced Cell & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, OMICs in Biotechnology Research, Ethical Concerns in Biotechnology and Undergraduate research Experience. My research integrates drug discovery with neuroscience, aiming to develop pharmacological leads for neurodegenerative diseases caused by proteinopathies or protein stability system alterations.

Beyond research, I am a seasoned public speaker, delivering talks on scientific research, diversity and inclusion, cognitive time management, emotional intelligence, breaking the fear of public speaking, and career counseling. I believe in the transformative power of education and am dedicated to making science accessible and inclusive.

I also bring my expertise to public service. I am an appointed member of the California Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), where I serve on both the Legislation and Regulations Committee and the Practice Committee. In this role, I contribute to shaping healthcare policy, ensuring patient safety, and supporting professional standards across the state.

In parallel, I am pursuing an Ed.M. at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, focusing on inclusive instructional design and strategies to reduce disparities in higher education. I am keen on expanding expertise in integrating artificial intelligence into instructional design, higher education innovation, and AI policy development to enhance learning, equity, and institutional effectiveness.

Inspired by Louis Pasteur’s words, “Science knows no country because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world,” I strive to contribute to a global scientific community that values collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity.
